As a small business owner, you always want to be putting your best foot forward. Whether it’s when you’re networking or showing off your good work, you always need and want to be projecting your best image. 

And, your website is part of this image. In fact, your website is probably the first place your customers and potential customers will look to find out more about your business. 

There are two types of SMB owners out there – the ones who make their website an important focus of their business development plan and are always maintaining and refreshing it; and the ones who built their website once upon a time and have left it unnoticed and untouched on the web to wither away. 

Updating your website regularly is important for a whole lot of reasons. If your website has any of these no-no’s or blasts from past design eras (and in the world of the web, an era doesn’t last long) then it’s time to think about making a change. 

You know your website hasn’t been updated this century when:

  • You have at least 22 items on your menu bar and each one has a drop down menu.
  • Your left side bar echoes your top menu.
  • Your ‘Contact Us’ button isn’t easily found in the top right-hand corner of the website.
  • Your bottom bar has just your company name and logo (and maybe even an out-of-date copyright year) rather than keywords and quick links.
  • You have an ‘About Us’ page.
  • The home page auto plays welcome music. Extra points if this music is midi files.
  • Videos on any page auto play.
  • You have a welcome page before the home page.
  • There is more text than images on your pages. Worse yet, there are no images.
  • It’s not mobile-friendly.
  • You have multiple external links that lead to now defunct pages.
  • It’s been created in Adobe Flash.
  • It only works with specific browser versions or it looks different when viewed in different browsers. 

If you’re guilty of one or more of these, it’s definitely time to consider redesigning your website. Sure some of these transgressions are worse than others but having a solid, responsive and easy-to-navigate website is a huge part of your business’s success. Don’t let your website fall behind your competitors. 

Worse yet, don’t envy your competitors’ website. Instead, make them envious of yours.
