What’s the point in having your own website if you can’t have a little fun with it? Consequently I’ve decided to add a second blog, not related to the business of Growth Path. It will mostly cover off my other great love – movies and entertainment. It’s been 25 years since I professionally reviewed movies and plays, but that hasn’t slowed down the opinions.
Every year end, I make a list of films I think will garner Oscar nominations. Not necessarily my favourites, but what the Academy has shown a taste for – or can’t overlook. This year, I decided to document these a month before the nominations come out – we’ll see soon where I went wrong.
Cream of the crop: These are movies I loved, and which will certainly get Best Picture nods. In alphabetic order:
- Black Swan
- Inception
- The King’s Speech
- The Social Network
And some probables I think deserve the recognition:
- Another Year
- The Town
- Winter’s Bone
I originally had Toy Story 3 in this list, until I tried to recall it and realized it hadn’t made a lasting impression.
Some flawed films which might still make the cut:
- Barney’s Version
- The Fighter
- The Kids Are Alright
- Made In Dagenham
Of these, I thought Barney’s Version and Made in Dagenham should have been much better than they ended up, given the talent involved.
I’ll review these in more detail when the nominations hit, when I will also be scrambling to see any last minute releases which score.
